Jared Bird was chosen to make his professional debut on Tuesday because of his tactical understanding and defensive qualities.
The central midfielder, who turns 20 on Monday, was brought on for the final 25 minutes of the victory over Nottingham Forest in midweek.
Head coach Paul Heckingbottom said: "It was good to give Jared a chance. He's been doing great.
"We have different squads for the under 23s and first team in terms of training and matchdays but there is no pecking order at our club and, if you are good enough, you play.
"Jared knows the role very well and that's what has impressed me the most. We needed someone with good tactical understanding and we needed to be a little bit stronger without the ball. I went for him over Alex (Mowatt) because Jared is more defensive."
