THE landlord and landlady at one of Barnsley’s most iconic pubs are set to stand down after almost a decade in charge.
Marilyn Johnson, 63, and her husband, 70-year-old David, were only supposed to take on the Tom Treddlehoyle pub in Pogmoor on a temporary basis in 2015.
But nine years later and they insist they’ve loved every minute.
Marilyn said they’ve had to step down due to health issues - and after handing in their notice recently they’re set to leave the site early next year.
She told the Chronicle: “It’s very sad.
“We’ve been here for nine years so a lot of memories stand out.
“We’ve seen so many people come and go.
“It’s a lovely pub and there’s so many lovely people that we’ve met.
“It’s iconic.”
Marilyn had no prior experience in pubs before taking over the ‘Tred’ - but she’s now sad to be leaving.
“Many years ago Tom use to have The Outpost on Sheffield Road.
“We only came here as our friend wanted someone to look after it over a short period.
“I used to be a care manager but I love this - it’s only the health issues that have stopped us doing this for another few years.”
Marilyn says that people are already queuing up to take over and she expects to be out early in the new year - but not before one hell of a party.
“Someone is going to be very lucky and be able to take this on,” she added.
“There’s so many people already interested in it.
“We might end up being out in January or February.
“We’ve got plans for a big party before we go.’
