THE manager of a town centre pub has hit back at claims that the venue ‘disrespected’ Remembrance Sunday events.

It was claimed that the White Bear, on Church Street, had chosen to empty its bottle bins during the Remembrance service on Barnsley Town Hall’s steps.

Manager Michael Duke refuted the accusation and invited anyone to check its CCTV from the day.

“Each year on Remembrance Day we open early for veterans,” he told the Chronicle.

“So we opened from 9am and were offering free teas and coffees to veterans, as well as a shot of whiskey or port.

“There were also bacon sandwiches which we gave out at a discounted price.

“We were really busy all morning until the parade began when people started heading out.

“So as for disrespecting the event, we actually did the opposite - no-one emptied the bottle bins so to have seen those claims could have been damaging for us.”
