BOROUGH of Barnsley’s Emma Cherryholme has been selected to represent Yorkshire in the Masters Inter County Championships next month.
This is the first time a swimmer from the club’s competitive development squad been selected. She is due to compete on November 10 in Middlesbrough.
Emma swam for the club from 1994 to 2002, competing in the national championship, then spent more than two decades away from the sport before returning in 2023.
Emma said: “I started swimming again following a Facebook post I saw about masters swimming in Barnsley.
“I train with the competitive development squad a few times a week and aim to compete two or three times a year.
“We have a fantastic squad who all offer support and encouragement to each other. Being a masters swimmer is completely different to swimming in my teenage years.
“I now have to find a balance between training, having a career, raising my two daughters and it’s often a massive juggling act that I couldn’t manage without my supportive family.
“I also find that I have to train in different ways now, including more gym sessions and alternate cardio such as running to make up for the pool sessions I miss due to other commitments.
“All the hard work myself and the masters team have put in this year has led us to some great performances in the pool and I was thrilled to be selected to represent Yorkshire.”
