ONE carer has been on a mission to provide the support other at-home carers need to continue doing their work.
Joseph David has been working for Crossroads Care which is based on Stocks Lane since 2005 when he joined the company as a carer.
However in the years since he’s risen through the ranks, and now as CEO is doing everything he can to live up to the company’s motto caring for carers.
He told the Chronicle: “As we care for someone who needs care, we also identify the person or family members that care for them.
“These people go through a lot of difficulties, emotionally, mentally and physically as well.
“It takes a lot of strength, so as a charity we want to provide some respite for carers.
“We’ll provide three or four hours for them that can be free each week, so they can go out and enjoy themselves and have a life of their own.”
In recent years they have also started Cafe Crossroads, which gives carers a space to connect, and this year received funding to begin a weekend memory hub that provides a safe space for those living with dementia, their carers and family.
Thanks to Joseph’s dedication countless have received support and for all he does to keep this charity afloat and ensure that care continues to be delivered across the borough, he has been nominated at this year’s Proud of Barnsley.
“I started at Crossroads as a care support worker, so I personally have many experiences of working with carers,” he added.
“Over 20 years I’ve developed and picked up qualifications my journey has come through that experience.
“The people I cared for may not still be here, but their loved ones stay in touch with me.
“So when someone tells me what they’re going through, I can put myself in their position because I was there myself.
“I just want to do more.”
