GRAND plans to bring a historic Grade-II-listed site back into use in Penistone have finally been submitted to Barnsley Council’s planning board.

The coal drops site, under the former Penistone-Woodhead Line which was once a leading hub of the railway in the north, consists of six arched segments which date back to the mid-19th century.

The line was closed during the so-called ‘Beeching cuts’ in the 1960s, but much of the infrastructure remained intact with the old platforms, tracked and station buildings still visible.

Although it continued to operate as a freight line, the track was lifted completely in 1981 and much of the route became a cycle trail.

However, its buildings were abandoned and safety fears were subsequently raised.

It was acquired by Fairbank Investments in March 2023 and the site which received its listed status in 1988 is set to be transformed into business units, restaurants and retail space.

Fairbank Investments has experience in local development, having previously revitalised the former David Brown factory site in Penistone into a successful business park.

The company hopes the current development will bring new economic opportunities, create jobs, and support local businesses.

Artist impressions were first unveiled to the public in March last year and Fairbank have said they have now finally submitted a planning application to the council, seeking to restore the derelict site.

Bosses behind the scheme say the proposals will revitalise the historic site in the heart of the market town, transforming it from a wasteland into a progressive and highly desirable development comprising retail and office space, combined with a premium hospitality venue and contemporary business units.

After extensive consultations and careful consideration, the company has put forward detailed proposals for a dynamic, mixed-use development that will boost the local economy while preserving the rich, industrial heritage of the area.

Restoration of the culturally significant location will also create many jobs and deliver future prosperity for the site, bosses say.

Antony Green, director of the firm, said that the scheme will blend historical preservation with modern amenities.

He added: “We are incredibly proud to bring forward this ambitious project, which reflects our deep commitment to Penistone’s heritage, economic growth, and community development.

“Through this carefully planned redevelopment, we aim to create a thriving business hub while preserving the town’s historical essence.”
