EXTENSIVE renovation work done to transform a historic miners’ hall has now been completed - with hopes the improved facilities will benefit the community for years to come.

Mayor of Barnsley Coun John Clarke officially reopened Great Houghton Miners’ Welfare Hall on Tuesday, following months of work to modernise and future-proof the venue.

Funded as part the council’s Principal Towns and Local Centres programme, which has already seen £5m invested into six locations, the work completed includes replacing the roof, protecting the cellar from damp, upgrades to the kitchen and LED lighting installed throughout the hall.

Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, added: “It’s about making sure that all parts of the borough get a piece of the cake.

“You look at the job they’ve done here and it’s marvellous - it’s bringing it up to date and keeping it going for the future.

“We took the step to invest in the town centre and it’s paid off - you don’t need me to say that, you only have to ask the people who come from all over the country to see what we’ve done.

“Of course the ongoing work we’re doing there is only going to make things better, but we can’t leave places like this behind.”
