MILLIONS will be spent on resurfacing dozens of Barnsley’s pothole-ridden roads over the next year thanks to a huge improvement scheme put forward by the council’s highways department.
At next week’s cabinet meeting, ruling councillors will be asked to sign off on a total of £17.3m investment over the next 12-month financial period.
This includes around £11.3m for the annual Highways Capital Programme, an additional £2m investment for principal roads and side streets, as well as £2.07m of government funding for ‘potholes and highway maintenance’.
There are a number of different ‘treatments’ the council use to ensure that the roads and pathways are at their best.
Resurfacing involves removing the top layer of a road surface and replacing it with a new layer, while retreading is a recycling process which reconstructs the entire carriageway surface to a depth of 75mm, recycling the existing carriageway surface without having to remove it from site.
Surface dressing, which has been earmarked for a number of the town’s roads, is a more cost-effective solution.
It involves applying a thin layer of bitumen and stone chippings to the surface of a road.
Sometimes it is necessary to fill in deeper potholes and defects first before this process is completed in what is known as ‘patching’.
Council bosses say their ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach is the way forward.
Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “We are proud to bring the Highways Capital Programme to cabinet and continue the investment in our roads.
“In total, just under £17.3m is to be invested into our highway network over the next financial year so we can continue to build upon the progress we have already made in improving the roads across the borough.
“Our sustained investment is improving Barnsley’s roads, investing in our communities and unlocking economic growth opportunities across the borough.
“I’d like to thank our highways team for their incredible efforts during the last financial year, with team’s working in all conditions and throughout the night to improve our road network.”
The report, which will be discussed on Wednesday, also highlights a total of £15.9m which has been earmarked for the 2026/27 highways capital programme.
Bosses say that improving the town’s roads will bring economic benefits to the borough.
The report added: “High-quality maintenance will improve the current highway asset to achieve a transport system for Barnsley that facilitates a prosperous, sustainable economy for the borough.
“This will enhance awareness that Barnsley is a more attractive place for both business creation and business relocation, encouraging investment in employment opportunities in the borough.
“Improvements to the town centre, principal towns and other local centres will make them more attractive and user-friendly destination for work, shopping, culture and tourism.
“Works listed in this programme provide integrated transport-focused improvements to upgrade the highway network to promote active travel, health and well-being, air quality and road safety.
“Works include signal upgrades to improve congestion and network management, road safety improvements, accessibility improvements and active travel enhancements.”
