Dodworth woman Sue Gilroy agonisingly missed out on her first Paralympic medal as she lost her bronze medal match 3-2 after being two sets up.
The 43-year-old teacher at Shawlands School got further than at any of her previous four Paralympics as she made it through the group for the first time. She then won her quarter-final, surviving a match point, before a straight sets semi-final loss put her into the bronze medal fixture against Serbia's Nada Matic.
Sue won the first set 14-12 and the second 11-8 but then lost 11-8 in the third, then went down 11-6 in both the fourth and the fifth.
There is still a chance of a Barnsley medal as Hoyland Common man Ian Sagar is excelling with the Great Britain wheelchair basketball team. He is leading the way with 70 points in their fourth wins out of four so far which have put them into the semi-final. They face USA later today to decide who finishes top of the group.
Wortley’s Antony Cotterill went out of the quad wheelchair tennis in the first round on Friday.
