WALKING sports are proving to show promise to improve men’s mental health.

Celebrating International Men’s Day on Tuesday, Barnsley’s u3a branch encourages retired men to combat loneliness by partaking in team sports.

Walking football provides an exciting and accessible take on the traditional sport.

The game is non-contact and does not allow running or jogging.

Pitches are smaller, with compact goals, encouraging people of all abilities to take part.

John MacKinnon, a spokesperson for u3a, said: “Here in Barnsley u3a, I’m proud to say that we’ve been enjoying walking football since 2017.

“Walking football offers a fun, low-impact alternative to the traditional game, allowing members to actively stay fit without physical strain.

“It’s been a fantastic way for our members to stay engaged, active and connected, all while having a great time."

The group also offers walking rugby, which has been adapted to be as similar to touch rugby as possible.

The game emphasises handling skills, movement and avoiding the ‘touch’ tackle to create a safe playing experience.

Local sports groups can be found on u3a’s website.

Graham Truluck, also of u3a, added: "For those craving the camaraderie and banter of a team game, walking rugby is a great opportunity.

“You will be amazed at the fitness benefits of playing walking rugby.

“Nothing beats some fun sporting action in the fresh air.”
