PUPILS and local dignitaries turned out to honour the Holgate Grammar School ‘old boys’ who lost their lives in both world wars - ensuring that their sacrifice is never forgotten.
At Shaw Lane Sports Club last week, dozens turned out to honour the former pupils, after local historians like Ian Harley, Melvyn Lunn and Jane Ainsworth saved the plaque from gathering dust in a store room when the school closed down.
The Griffin Suite was decorated with poppies made by pupils of Trinity St Edward’s, Horizon and Joseph Locke schools, who also laid wreaths during the service.
MPs Stephanie Peacock and Dan Jarvis - who served in Iraq and Afghanistan himself - led tributes and thanked all those involved with organising such a poignant service.
The names of the 98 former pupils who died in service during World War Two, as well as the 76 who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War One, were then read out to a new generation of youngsters, who will carry on their memory.
Following the service, £1,500 raised through the sales of The Holgate 100 book was donated to both SSAFA (Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association) and the Royal British Legion.
