OAKWELL is set to be taken over for a charity event that will raise funds to help victims of sexual abuse and prevent future incidents.

The charity SAPREA aims to support those who survived sexual abuse as a child, while providing resources and guidance that can protect the next generation of children.

Women receiving support from the group can be invited to free retreats where they experience counselling and are aided through their journey, while online support is also provided.

Now to support the international cause, one local has organised a ‘ladies night’ at Oakwell Stadium where she hopes people will turn out to push the important cause.

Taking place on May 17, the event will feature live music, food and drink, all in service of a good cause.

Organiser Kim Thornton told the Chronicle: “I went to an event in Berlin in October where I had the opportunity to speak to SAPREA staff.

“There were a lot of women there who had been on the retreats or who’s suffered abuse as a child.

“We talked about the different ways we could raise money for the charity and I went away for a few months with a head full of ideas.

“It took a lot of time but we’re finally getting there now - we just need to get up the ticket sales.”
