A BOOK telling the remarkable story of FA Cup-winning brothers from West Melton will be released next month.

George and Ted Robledo won the FA Cup with Newcastle United in 1952 with George’s header being the winner in a 1-0 triumph over Arsenal.

George, who was also in the Newcastle team who won the FA Cup a year earlier, gained immortality with the goal and he will be the main focus of Spencer Vignes’ book ‘Postcards from Santiago’.

George was an outstanding striker who started out at Barnsley FC before earning a move to the north-east and ensuring his brother Ted came as part of the deal.

The former Bevin Boy went from strength to strength on Tyneside, scoring 82 goals in 146 appearances.

During the 1951/52 season he scored 33 goals in the top flight which has been a record for a foreign-born striker for seven decades.

George was a prolific writer, even for the Chronicle where he wrote an exclusive column about Newcastle’s pioneering tour of North America, and the book will feature many of the correspondence he had with people back in England.

The brothers had been born in Chile but were raised in West Melton by their Yorkshire-born mum.

The book is out on April 8 and author Spencer will be on hand to sign copies and talk about the book at Library @ the Lightbox on May 10 between 11.30am and 12.30pm.
