A FORMER working men’s club in Royston is set to be demolished to make way for five new bungalows.

The venue, on Church Street, was known locally as ‘Klondike’ but officially closed to the public last year.

An application to bulldoze it was submitted to the council’s planning board in August.

The application states that five new bungalows and a new access to the site will be created after Barnsley Council gave the plans the green light earlier this week.

A report states: “The existing building is to be demolished in its entirety, with a new vehicular access created centrally on the eastern boundary off Church Street.

“The road will extend towards the west with a hammerhead at the end.

“Plots one to three will be situated to the south of the road, plot four to the west and plot five to the north.

“All five bungalows would be two bedrooms and include off street parking in addition to either an attached or detached single garage and private garden.

“Plot one and two are the same housetype with an attached single garage, whilst plots three to five each have a slightly different layout with a detached garage.”

One letter of objection was submitted to the council, as well as one supporting letter.

It comes just a week after plans to demolish the nearby Alexandra Working Men’s Club in Royston were finally been submitted to the council following months of speculation.

That club, on adjoining High Street, was closed for much of last year and a notice had been placed on a nearby lamppost informing locals of its forthcoming demolition.

Public consultation for those plans ended on Friday.
