BARNSLEY Hospital has paid out more than £17m in children’s medical negligence claims over the last five years, a new study has revealed.
NHS trusts in South Yorkshire have paid out more than £92m in compensation for claims lodged against them since 2019.
Barnsley Hospital paid out £17,094,107, settling 14 legal claims of medical negligence involving children’s care.
In the last five years, it has had 26 incidents reported to the NHS legal body.
It means the trust has paid out the second-highest amount since 2019.
A spokesperson for Barnsley Hospital said NHS Resolution settled litigation claims on behalf of all NHS Trusts.
They added: “While we are unable to comment on the specific detail of the claims referred to, we acknowledge that any failure to provide care to the high standards we expect can impact on our patients and their loved ones.
“We take every opportunity to listen to those receiving our care and to learn, acting openly and honestly when those standards are not met.
“We remain committed to continual improvement in the care and support offered to everyone using our service.”
