Barnsley is the 'Samba Capital' of the world, after the Guinness World Record for the biggest samba band was set at Oakwell.

The 670-strong band played for five minutes and 47 seconds. They played a piece written by Tim Brain, of drum teaching and manufacturing company Louder Than Life, who organised the event.

The members ranged from the age of three, up to 70, and included Penistone Grammar School's own Samba Band, as well as bands from around the country. Tim said: "It was a few shy of what we'd hoped for, but it was still absolutely brilliant, and we still set the world record.

"We lost a lot of people to the TUC demonstration in London, which was organised pretty last minute. It was a shame but I understand people wanted to go to that. "Everyone really enjoyed it, so there is talk of us maybe trying to break our own record, or even doing something every year."
