A NEW free play group aimed at supporting the local community was officially launched last week.

After working with the council’s Family Hubs services, Hunningley Primary Academy decided they would create the new group to support young children across Barnsley.

Sessions will take place each Tuesday at the school from 8.30am to 10am and parents are being encouraged to get involved, even if they don’t already have children at the school.

Rachel Keightley, who works at the school, told the Chronicle: “Our play group started this week and is funded by our trust, United Learning.

“It’s part of the drive towards establishing a community hub within the local community by 2026.

“It has been suggested by the parents and after months of work with Barnsley Family Hubs.

“We aim to support parents and our children within the wider community, in collaboration with the hub to provide advice and support, as required, in a safe and supportive environment.

“We know the importance of early years development and the positive impact a high quality provision can have on children in improving overall social and academic outcomes in the long term.
