Darrell Clarke praised the 919 Barnsley fans who travelled to Cambridge to watch the 1-1 draw at the weekend.
The away end was noisy throughout and clapped the players off, after Stephen Humphrys’ superb individual goal cancelled out an early opener.
The head coach told the Chronicle: “A big thank you to the away fans. They gave the lads a right reception at the end. That tells you what they thought of the performance.”
Clarke switched formation from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 with captain Luca Connell suspended. But Max Watters, who started in the middle of the front three, came off injured very early and was replaced by midfielder Kelechi Nwakali as the Reds reverted to 3-5-2.
Clarke said: “I thought we could cause a lot of problems with three up. It worked at Shrewsbury. We didn’t really get to see it because Max came off so early.”
Clarke is pleased with the progress in Barnsley’s attack in the last month.
“Our forward-thinking play has decent rhythm now. We are seeing a team which is well-organised, well-drilled and causes the opposition problems.”
Barnsley are now due to host Wigan Athletic on Saturday then Reading on Tuesday. They are currently fifth in League One with 26 points from 15 games.
