A GROUP of cancer survivors who found a community by singing together have been invited to Germany for a special community fair.

The We Can Survive Singers have built up quite a reputation in Barnsley, though are now ready to spread their message that cancer isn’t the end across the globe as the head of to twin town Schwabish Gmund next week.

They have been invited to take part in the ‘Day of Cultures’ on Sunday October 20, which will see between 40 and 60 groups - including Barnsley’s Schwabish Gmund Society and Mayor John Clarke - visit the town.

Founder Cheryl Sanderson MBE told the Chronicle: “Our singing group has been chosen to represent Barnsley at the fair because of the work we’ve done in the community.

“They talked about the support we offer to people and how we hep people with cancer still have fun.”

Yorkshire Rose Holidays will be taking the group and through fundraising they have managed to raise around £5,000 to pay for the journey.

They have also received sponsorship from Matalan, who have provided special hoodies for the trip.

“We’re all very excited,” Cheryl added.

“It will be a really great life experience for everyone.

“What we do is not necessarily about singing but also about how singing can help us all.

“We’ll also be meeting with other cancer patients out there.

“It’s good really because cancer doesn’t only exist in Barnsley, it’s something that affects everyone.”
