Shafton councillors want a speed camera to be installed at an accident black spot where two young men were killed.

At a meeting of the parish council, members agreed to write to Steve Houghton and the council's highways department asking for councillors to visit Engine Lane in Shafton and put speed restrictions in place.

The move comes after teenage soldier Josh Powell and his friend, Danny Hancock were killed following the accident on May 19.

Josh, 18, and Danny, 25, both from Grimethorpe, were thrown from the Peugeot 306 convertible which hit a lamppost, crashed through a garden wall and into a house.

Josh, of Park Avenue, a member of the Light Dragoons, died at the scene while Danny, of Elizabeth Street, died in Barnsley Hospital last Wednesday. Police believe the car was speeding.

A man who lives next door to the house which the car crashed into attended the meeting and gave his sympathies to the two men's families.

But he said there is a problem with speeding vehicles, which he felt would cost more lives and residents needed more protection.

Chairman of the council Dave North said there has been a number of fatalities on the road and speed indicator devices could be used to record traffic speeds.

"We've got to have a meeting down there to put our concerns as a community forward about what is wrong with that road," he said.
