A LOCAL councillor and resident have teamed up in a bid to get a post box reinstated in Darfield after it was knocked down a number of months ago.
John Adams, 71, contacted Royal Mail after the post box on Upperwood Road - opposite Lugano Grove - was knocked down five months ago without being replaced.
Post boxes should be placed within half a mile of each other and the nearest is 0.6 miles away.
And despite it only being 0.1 mile further to travel, John believes it’s the principle that matters.
He told the Chronicle: “It was removed about five months ago after it was knocked down and now there’s just some bricks there.
“I informed Royal Mail a couple of months ago ago as nothing seemed to be happening to replace it.
“I know it’s only 0.1 miles further but it begs the question as to why the demolished box would have been there in the first place place if it wasn’t at least half a mile from the nearest alternative.”
Coun Kevin Osborne, who represents the Darfield ward, added: “Following engagement with residents I have made direct contact with Royal Mail on this issue highlighting firstly that the three alternative post boxes available are 0.6 miles away from the broken Upperwood Road box, not 0.5 miles as indicated by the Royal Mail.
“It may only be a 0.1 mile difference but if it mattered six months ago why doesn’t it matter now?
“I understand the broken box is currently in safekeeping by Royal Mail and could quickly be restored to its original position.
“Let’s hope Royal Mail can deliver a higher level of customer service than that currently experienced by customers in Darfield at the moment.”
