FORMER England cricketer Samit Patel is the latest high-profile player to sign for Hoylandswaine who begin their season this week.

All-rounder Patel, now 40, played six Test Matches and 36 One Day Internationals for England during a 21-year spell with Nottinghamshire.

He is contracted to Derbyshire for white ball limited overs games but is expected to play about ten matches for Huddersfield League side Swaine throughout the season, potentially including the opener on Saturday.

The Haigh Lane club have previously had Alex Lees – who credited his spell with Hoylandswaine in helping him get into the England team – and Kamran Ghulam, who made a century on Test debut for Pakistan against England after being Swaine’s overseas player last season. They have also had Kesrick Williams, before he played internationally for the West Indies, and Junaid Khan after his spell in the Pakistan Test Team.

Swaine’s overseas player this season will be Harpreet Singh who previously had successful seasons with Barnsley Woolley Miners.

They have also signed batter Luke Bridges from Barkisland and bowler Faheem Basharat.
