A LOCAL football team are lacing up their boots this August for an ‘ambitious’ fundraiser in the Peak District.
Brierley Cubs u11s will be setting off on a sponsored walk around Mam Tor, a 517m hill near Castleton, to raise money for the NHS.
The team, joined by their parents and coaches, will be making the walk on August 16, with ten per cent of all funds raised being donated to health services in Barnsley.
Reece Germany, the team’s coach, told the Chronicle: “Normally we do a sponsored walk every year, to raise money for tournaments and equipment for the lads, but this year we’ve decided it can be bigger and better.
“Players and parents alike will be pushing themselves to their limits to raise vital funds for new equipment for the upcoming season.
“We think it will be great if some of the money we raise is kindly given back to the NHS in Barnsley, as a way of thanking them for what they do.”
Reece thinks the team have shown incredible spirit on the pitch and will be taking this into the hills to support their club.
The location of the walk was chosen by Lisa Cooper, a parent of one of the players.
She added: “I think this walk is ambitious and a good challenge, and these kids love a challenge.
“They’ve got a lot of fire in their belly and never give up.”
Lisa is a nurse in Barnsley, and praised the boys for planning to put some of the donations into local health services.
She added: “I know the struggles that the NHS go through and how hard it can be, so I think it’s a good time to give something back.
“Hopefully this can be done annually to raise some money, and to get people thinking about and donating to people who do a lot for us.”
The group have set a £1,500 target, you can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/reece-germany?utm_medium=CR&utm_source=CL
