A YOUNG dancer who competes against people twice her age has discovered a passion that will carry her throughout the rest of her life.

While she may only be six years old, Amelia Rose Nelson hasn’t let her age hold her back as she competes across the country taking home more medals than the family have space for.

And her talent may be in the family, as she follows in the footsteps of her mother, Tanya Nelson, who danced when she was younger.

She told the Chronicle: “I used to dance so when Amelia came along I thought I’d take her.

“She’s absolutely amazing - she’s dancing against 11 year olds and making it to finals at only six.

“I think she just loves being on the dance floor - that and competing, she loves competing.

“She’s very competitive and likes to be the best at everything she does.

“If she could, she’d live in the dance studio.”

In the future, Amelia - who practices at the Karen Byron School of Dance in Thurnscoe - hopes to open her own school and teach dancing to aspiring youngsters like herself.

For her unwavering dedication she’s been nominated for this year’s Young Champions awards.

Though, while Tanya may love seeing her succeed, it’s not the medals, trophies or acclaim that makes her most proud.

“She’ll absolutely love being nominated,” she added.

“But the thing I want her to get recognition for is how she’s become so passionate and dedicated.

“You get so many kids these days who want to sit in front of their screens all day - Amelia wants to be out there.

“She wants to make something of herself - it’s inspirational.”
