ILLNESS, delays and snow kept Proud of Barnsley winner Frank Senior from receiving his trophy - but now it’s finally been delivered.
Following a stroke in 2011, Frank was diagnosed with aphasia, a crippling disorder that affected his ability to speak, read, write and understand language.
For years he was trapped inside his own body, unable to express himself or communicate with the people closest to him.
Yet, his determination shone through, and thanks to years of work and an innovative computer program, the man from Darfield can now say the odd word and use his laptop to communicate.
His resilience through what is an unimaginable struggle was praised by judges at last year’s Proud of Barnsley awards, with Frank winning in the Triumph Over Adversity category.
Unfortunately, as both he and his wife were ill on the night, the two were unable to attend the award show at the Metrodome and following months of failed attempts to present the trophy he finally received his award last week.
While Frank admired the trophy, Lyn expressed her delight, saying ‘it’s like the Oscars’.
