Conor Hourihane is ‘delighted’ to be Barnsley’s permanent head coach but says the club needs a ‘reset’ with ‘fresh energy and fresh faces around the place.’

The 34-year-old was given a two-year deal, with an option for a third season, after being interim boss for six games.

Hourihane told the Chronicle: “I am delighted, of course. There is a lot to organise. There are three games to go and we have to finish the season with decent performances and a couple of good results. But the big aim is for the club to have a reset. We need fresh energy and fresh faces around the place.”

Hourihane is thought to be have impressed the Reds board with his attitude as interim head coach.

He said: “It’s earlier than I expected but I have worked really hard for it. They have obviously seen something in me in terms of my coaching ability and how I conduct myself.”
