A MUCH-LOVED magazine which delved into Barnsley in days gone by has published its final issue.
Memories of Barnsley started in 2007 under the guidance of Rebecca Lawther and Paul Wilkinson and released 73 editions over its lifespan.
Originally some Chronicle reporters including John Threlkeld, Ian Thompson and Kath Parkin wrote some articles with Rebecca, Paul and Brian Elliott supplying further content.
As the years rolled by many others contributed regularly, such as Andrew Taylor, Rose Johnston, Roni Wilkinson and Paul Stebbing from the Barnsley Archives group.
However, it was its army of readers who also supplied articles and photos, cementing its place as a popular, quarterly magazine.
Paul, who took over an its editor in 2012, told the Chronicle it was a sad day when the final issue was printed.
“The magazine provided a unique pictorial history of Barnsley through the 1900s,” he added.
“It was the story of local people as they lived through world wars, mining disasters, the rise and fall of local industry and of course memories of living during the 1950s and 1960s in the town they grew up in.
“Many people’s favourite part of the magazine was the competition page, with the mystery photograph.
“People would often say how they had many a conversation with relatives about guessing the location of the photograph and what they remembered about it.
“As editor it has been a privilege to get to know so many people over the years and to be able to tell their stories.
“The magazine will be sadly missed by all the readers and contributors.”
