MORE than £10m has been set aside in Barnsley Council’s budget to invest in the Glass Works.
A total of £10.52m has been fenced off, some of which has already been spent on the Tommy Taylor Bridge and its surrounding areas.
The money has been earmarked for improvement since the start of the scheme a number of years ago, and work is ongoing using that funding.
The investment is focused on enhancing public spaces, improving fire safety, and improving traffic flow on the Alhambra Road junction.
The funding covers a number of years, and some of it will have been brought forward from last year.
It will be in the council’s budget until it has been spent on its intended purpose or is no longer required.
Coun Robert Frost, cabinet spokesperson for core services, said: “As part of our commitment to maintaining the Glass Works, money was set aside for a life cycle replacement programme of planned essential maintenance and repair works.
“These include necessary maintenance and repairs in the market, such as replacing doors as well as improvements.
“The budget for this maintenance is funded from the income generated by the tenants of the Glass Works and was approved by the cabinet in 2023.
“The works were completed in 2024.”
