Barnsley have collected a point from their last five games after a 2-0 loss at high-flying Stockport County on Saturday lunchtime.
The Reds trailed 2-0 at half-time following a very poor first half performance which saw them concede twice in four minutes after the half-hour mark.
They were better after the break then Davis Keillor pulled one back in the 90th minute.
Barnsley remain tenth, a point off the top six but the gap could grow after the 3pm kick-offs. The Reds have lost their last three away games.
Stephen Humphrys missed the game due to illness and was replaced by new signing Clement Rodrigues who made his debut, while Luca Connell came in for Kyran Lofthouse who has moved to Burton Albion.
Barnsley played a midfield diamond with Jon Russell just behind strikers Rodrigues and Davis Keillor-Dunn, Kelechi Nwakali in front of the defence, Adam Phillips on the right and Connell on the left.
Ibou Touray shot over the bar from just outside the box then Joe Gauci easily saved a Lewis Bate effort from a similar distance.
A Russell cross sailed just wide of the top left corner then Kyle Wootton headed just wide form a Touray cross.
The opener arrived on 31 minutes when Isaac Oloafe latched onto a long pass and beat Donovan Pines far too easily then fired past Gauci one-on-one.
Kyle Knoyle almost added a second but his shot from the right of the box was deflected just wide.
Knoyle was then tripped on the right of the box by Josh Earl after the Reds were opened up down their left. Will Collar converted the penalty for a second goal in four minutes.
Rodrigues was taken off at half-time and replaced by Neil Farrugia, usually a wing-back, who played up front with Connell going to left wing-back as they returned to 3-5-2 .
Barnsley started the second half much better. Keillor-Dunn shot well wide from 20 yards after brilliantly beating a man on the left, then he and Phillips and long-range efforts easily saved.
Russell should have made it 2-1 with a close-range header after being picked out by a Keillor-Dunn right-wing cross but Ben Hinchliffe denied him with a fine save.
Russell had another headed chance on 72 minutes when he met a left-sided Corey O’Keeffe corner but nodded straight at Hinchcliffe.
Deadline day signing Dexter Lembikisa came on for his debut at right wing-back with Connell returning to midfield and O’Keeffe moving to the left. Keillor-Dunn then saw a shot blocked after a scramble in the box then headed wide a Lembikisa cross.
Keillor-Dunn scored in the 90th minute, in off the right post after he brought down a Phillips cross and swapped passes with Russell in the box.
