Some Barnsley FC related stories coming out of the weekend.
REDS TO HOST ‘DEAD RUBBER’ DERBY IN TROPHY
Darrell Clarke is determined Barnsley finish their EFL Trophy campaign with a win in a ‘dead rubber’ at home to Doncaster Rovers tomorrow from 7pm.
The Reds cannot make it through to the knock-out stages having already lost to Manchester United under 21s and Huddersfield Town. Doncaster are second, but need a win to make certain of a place in the top two. They are fourth in the League Two table after losing in the play-offs last season.
Reds head coach Clarke said: “We’d like another league match but we can’t control that. The trophy game is a dead rubber and we’ll get some minutes into the legs of some of the lads. I want to win that game. Then we’re onto the FA Cup.”
Rovers are managed by Grant McCann – who played 44 games for the Reds between 2006 and 2008 – while his 18-year-old son Bayley is in the Oakwell youth system and made his senior debut in the first group game then was an unused substitute for the second.
McCann has won all five of his meetings with Clarke as managers – with his sides scoring 17 goals.
MIDWEEK CUP GAMES FOR YOUTH TEAMS
Both Barnsley under 18s and under 21s are due to play in midweek.
The under 18s visit Oldham Athletic in the first round of the FA Youth Cup on Monday evening at 7pm.
Two days later, the under 21s visit Athersley Rec in the Sheffield Senior Cup from 7.30pm.
The under 21s had drawn 1-1 at home to Sheffield United on Friday. Josiah Dyer opened the scoring.
