DARRELL Clarke admits there is ‘strong competition’ to start in Barnsley’s midfield three against Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Top-scorer Adam Phillips returns from suspension after his red card against Birmingham two weeks ago.

Kelechi Nwakali came in for him at Exeter on Saturday and impressed on his league full debut – scoring a stunning leveller in a 2-1 win. The Nigerian played alongside captain Luca Connell and Jon Russell. Clarke, who generally plays a midfield three, is likely to have to leave out one of Phillips, Nwakali, Russell or Connell for Saturday’s home game with Leyton Orient.

He said: “We want competition and players on their toes. To be successful, you have to have a strong squad.

“I mentioned before that our underbelly isn’t strong enough. We want to get those players stronger. Kelechi has come in and done well. There is strong competition in midfield. Jon Russell has come in recently and done well. Players have to understand they have to perform well to stay in the team.”

Centre-back Conor McCarthy made his first league start for more than 800 days at Exeter. Clarke said: “It gives my door a rest because he keeps knocking on it. I like that. He has been itching for an opportunity. I have had many chats with him. I understand the frustration.

“He trains and conducts himself in a very very professional manner. I can only pick 11. Conor has probably been fifth choice centre-back, so he had to be patient. He had a solid game.”
