LIBERAL Democrat candidate Andy Waters has been named as the new councillor for the Dodworth ward following a by-election.

The election, which took place on Thursday, was held after former Lib Dem Coun Sam Christmas stood down.

A total of 2,073 votes were cast, with three rejected ballot papers - the turnout was 24.38 per cent.

Andy Waters picked up almost half of the votes and is the new councillor for the Dodworth ward, meaning the area is still fully Lib Dem at the council chamber.

Reform UK’s candidate Eric Benson Hodgson finished second, while Labour’s Kate Hutchinson finished third.

Sarah Norman, chief executive of Barnsley Council and returning officer for Barnsley, said: “I would like to thank residents from the Dodworth ward for voting in this by-election and for making your vote count.”
