Barnsley are out of the EFL Trophy with a group game to play after another poor performance in a 2-0 loss at Huddersfield Town.
The hosts totally dominated the game and scored after an hour then in injury-time, missing several other chances.
The Reds did not have a shot on target, and only one off target, while Donovan Pines was sent off late on on a miserable night.
They have lost both their group games, and have another at home to Doncaster Rovers at the end of the month.
Darrell Clarke made nine changes from the team which lost in the league against the same club on Saturday, with Georgie Gent and Stephen Humphrys the only two to retain their starting place. Jon Russell was captain at his old club and played in a midfield three with debutant Kelechi Nwakali and Josh Benson.
The first half was extremely one-sided with the hosts dominating possession as the Reds could barely get out of their half and did not have any shots.
The game’s first chance arrived in the 27th minute when, after an intricate move opened Barnsley up, Nigel Lonwijk played through Freddie Ladapo who was denied one-on-one by Ben Killip.
Benson had to come off after half an hour with an injury, with teenager Jonathan Bland coming on.
Barnsley then survived a scramble on their goalline after Tom Lees headed a corner by ex-Red Herbie Kane towards goal.
Conor McCarthy passed the ball straight to Ladapo who fired over from the edge of the box on the stroke of half-time.
Antony Evans headed over minutes into the second half, eight yards out from a right-wing cross by ex-Red Matty Pearson.
Barnsley had their only real chance on 50 minutes, and it was a good one. After a fine pass by Nwakali, Kyran Lofthouse’s low cross from the right looked set to be turned in from close range by Aiden Marsh but he appeared to mishit the ball which trickled out of play.
Jonathan Hogg headed over from a Lasse Sorensen cross but Huddersfield did make the breakthrough after an hour. Evans easily turned Russell to open play up then played in Bojan Radulovic on the right of the box and his clever pass found Ladapo who shot into the bottom left corner from 15 yards.
Young defender Connor Barratt lost the ball deep in his half to Evans who crossed from the left but Killip touched it away from Radulovic. Killip then made a point blank save from Lonwijk after Evans crossed from the left having been picked out in yards of space by Sorensen.
Barnsley brought on 17-year-old striker Luke Alker for his professional debut then, later, Rob Kozluk’s son Ziggy who also made his senior debut.
Substitute Rhys Healey nearly doubled Town’s lead on 82 minutes but shot over from the right after a one, two with Hogg.
Pines was sent off on 83 minutes for taking out Tom Iorpenda who was clean through on goal.
Healey hit the post with a close-range header from Ollie Turton’s cross. Danny Ward eventually added a second in injury-time when he turned in an Iorpenda cross from the right.
