A HEADTEACHER who spent more than four decades with one school has been remembered by staff after her tragic and sudden death last week.
Sue Smith began her teaching career at St Pius X Catholic High School in Wath all the way back in 1980, and found such a strong community there that she chose to never leave.
Starting in the science department as a chemistry teacher, her 44-year-long career saw her take on various roles prior to her appointment as headteacher in 2016.
To the shock of everyone, Sue died last Monday aged 67.
The school leadership chose to close the school the the next day to give pupils and staff the chance to mourn.
Caroline Brown, assistant headteacher at the school, told the Chronicle: “Sue’s dedication and commitment to the students and families of the Dearne Valley is unparalleled.
“She was a source of wisdom to her colleagues and an inspiration to the thousands of students who were in her care over her long career.
“Sue will be especially remembered for her unwavering service to the Catholic Diocese of Hallam.
“The school has been inundated with messages of condolence and an outpouring of love for ‘one great lady’ - she will be greatly missed by colleagues, students, parents and carers.”
