Barnsley will visit near neighbours Huddersfield Town for the second time in four days on Tuesday evening for a 7.45pm kick-off in the EFL Trophy.
The Reds lost 2-0 at the Terriers – managed by their former boss Michael Duff – in League One on Saturday lunchtime with a disappointing performance.
They now return to the same stadium for the second group game in the trophy.
Both sides are likely to make several changes, even though each of their games on Saturday has been called off due to international call-ups.
None of Barnsley’s called-up trio of Vimal Yoganathan, Josiah Dyer and Fabio Jalo will feature.
There could be starts for senior players who are currently out of the league starting line-up such as Ben Killip, Donovan Pines, Conor McCarthy, Kyran Lofthouse and Josh Benson plus some younger players.
Head coach Darrell Clarke said: “I will pick a strong team because we don’t have a game the following weekend.
“It will be an opportunity for one to two to show me they can push for a place in the league.”
Barnsley lost their opening trophy game 3-2 at home to Manchester United under 21s in August, having led 2-0 on 82 minutes thanks to a Yoganathan brace.
Corey O’Keeffe was sent off in that game so is suspended.
Huddersfield also lost their opening game, against Doncaster who then lost to Manchester United under 21s on penalties. The young Red Devils are on five points and Donny four so, if either of Barnsley or Huddersfield loses in 90 minutes, they will be unable to qualify for the knock-outs with a game to play. The top two go through.
Barnsley host Doncaster on October 29.
