BARRY Cotter says playing 50 games for Barnsley is not a big milestone for him as he looks to appear many more times for the club.
The Irish right wing-back signed from Shamrock Rovers in January last year, being given a second chance in English football after barely playing during three years at Ipswich Town.
He played his 50th game for the club in the 2-2 draw with Northampton on Saturday.
Cotter told the Chronicle: “I just take it week by week.
“It’s a good start.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a big milestone for me to get 50 games.
“I want to play a lot more and get a lot better.”
While 30 of Cotter’s first 50 Reds games were substitute appearances, he has started the last two league games after Corey O’Keeffe started the first league match. He also impressed against Sheffield United in the EFL Cup in midweek.
He said: “To start any game at any level is pleasing but to do it at a club like Barnsley fills you with confidence.
“Everybody will get opportunities throughout the season.
“I have mine now and I just need to try to impact the team as much as possible. I am very pleased with my opportunities and hopefully I get more.
“Last week (at Lincoln) was probably one of my best performances defensively. Northampton was more open but I created chances.”
The Reds have collected four points from the opening three games. Cotter said: “We’re only at the start of the season. We look and feel good.
“We have to get the details right and put the final touches together then we will be a force to be reckoned with.
“It’s a great group of lads.
We know we can ask more of each other. I am in a great place with great people in that dressing room.”
Head coach Darrell Clarke said: “I have a laugh with Barry that he is speedboat with no driver. He’s a great lad around the club and I have a lot of time for him.
“We’re trying to get that consistency in his performance because he has that blistering pace.
“I want to put a footballing brain in his head and he’s been improving in that.”
