UNRULY yobs who have been plaguing Goldthorpe due to their antisocial behaviour could be evicted from their homes if they continue to cause disruption, the police have confirmed.

Officers from Barnsley South East’s Neighbourhood Policing Team have been out and about in Goldthorpe in recent weeks following residents’ concerns around antisocial behaviour.

It has resulted in seven children being stopped by the police - all of which will receive an antisocial behaviour warning letter.

But police bosses say that won’t be the end of the matter should they continue to cause trouble.

A spokesperson said: “After recent incidents of antisocial behaviour on Goldthorpe High Street, police have identified seven of the youth involved so far.

“Three of them have received an ASB1 warning letter, and another four will receive them in the coming days.

“Should the behaviour continue, then this process is escalated into civil or criminal orders.”

Some of those running riot in the area have parents who have a tenancy with Berneslai Homes - and the last course of action could be to remove them from the property.

Similar incidents have taken place in nearby Thurnscoe, and threats were also made in Darfield by the police in a bid to stop the behaviour.

“In certain circumstances, as we have previously done in Thurnscoe, we may seek possession of the offending families’ homes in partnership with the council, which will lead to them being evicted from the area,” they added.

“We will also seek to prosecute for criminal matters when they arise.

“Antisocial behaviour has reduced in the Dearne considerably since this time last year, but we still have a lot of work to do and will continue to pursue those responsible.”

Berneslai Homes has confirmed that those responsible could be evicted.

Dave Fullen, executive director of customer and estate services, said: “We’re part of Barnsley’s Safer Neighbourhood Services working closely with the council, police, and other partners to effectively manage antisocial behaviour.

“All agencies work together with the aim of a positive outcome to bring an end to antisocial behaviour and prevent further enforcement action, however should the behaviours continue, we will work together using the appropriate enforcement tools and powers, including eviction as a last resort.”

Figures obtained by the Chronicle show that from January to November last year - the latest figures available - there were a total of 1,109 incidents reported to the police in Goldthorpe.

A total of 117 of those were related to antisocial behaviour, equating for 10.6 per cent of all the incidents during the 11-month period.

Coun Sue Bellamy, who represents the Dearne North ward, told the Chronicle the recent incidents are ‘unacceptable’.

She added: “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who are working tirelessly to make our community a place where everyone feels safe and secure.

“This includes the dedicated members of South Yorkshire Police and Barnsley Council’s Safer Neighbourhood Team.

“Your hard work and commitment are truly appreciated by all of us.

“However, it is with great frustration that we observe some younger members of our community who still believe that it is acceptable to behave in a disruptive and unacceptable manner.

“My message to them is straightforward and clear - please reconsider your actions before you do something that you will regret for the rest of your life.

“It is never too late to make a positive change and contribute to the well-being of our community.”
