NO JALO SURGERY AND OUT FOR WEEKS NOT MONTHS
Fabio Jalo is not due to undergo surgery for an injured shoulder and is expected to be out for weeks rather than months.
The teenager sustained the injury against Derby County in a friendly last month.
Head coach Darrell Clarke told the Chronicle: “It was a decision that could have gone either way. It could have been surgery but we’re going to try to get work it without surgery. Having spoken to the lad we will strengthen up his shoulder. We will get him back as quickly as possible. It won’t be a case of months.”
REDS TO HOST MANCHESTER UNITED U21S IN TROPHY
Barnsley host Manchester United under 21s in the EFL Trophy tomorrow from 7pm.
The match has been brought forward after initially being scheduled for the first week in September.
It could potentially be a meeting of Reds assistant coach Martin Devaney and his teenage son Jacob who recently signed a professional contract with United.
Barnsley will look for their first win at Oakwell in eight attempts since February, although they are expected to make many changes from their league team with younger players involved.
They are also in a group with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers.
CUP DERBY CONFIRMED FOR TUESDAY
Barnsley’s EFL Cup tie with near neighbours Sheffield United has been confirmed for Tuesday, August 27 at 7.45pm.
The Reds - who won on penalties at Wigan in the first round - will be looking to reach the third for the first time since 2021. The Blades were relegated from the Premier League last season, have taken four points from two Championship games so far.
WOMEN START WITH A POINT
Barnsley FC Women began their season with a 2-2 draw at home to AFC Fylde.
The Reds, who have been promoted in each of the last two seasons, are now in the National League Division One North – the fourth tier in England.
After Freya Walton’s 35-yard lob was cancelled out by another long-range strike, Ruby Jex-Oldfield put the hosts ahead in the 83rd minute only for Barnsley to concede a minute later.
Barnsley now visit Durham Cestria on Sunday before hosting Barnsley Women’s FC in the League Cup on Wednesday.
U18S LOSE, 21S TO HOST CHARLTON
Barnsley under 18s lost 3-0 at Bristol City on Saturday.
Barnsley under 21s are due to face at home to Charlton tomorrow from 2pm. They are likely to field a younger side than usual as some of their players could be involved in the trophy game a few hours later.
