COLLEGE students are working with historians to celebrate the birthday of one of the country’s oldest fully-functioning mills that was recently saved from permanent closure.
Worsbrough Mill dates back to 1625 and despite a recent scare over its future following a failure in the main shaft, the unique landmark has received funding to ensure it continues to function for years to come.
Now, thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, staff at the mill will be working to create a year-long celebration of its 400th birthday.
Graphic design students from Barnsley College have been given a role in the celebrations, tasked with designing a ‘Worsbrough Mill 400’ logo that will be used throughout the year.
Meanwhile, photography students have been invited to create a new portfolio of photographs that capture the building’s history.
Sally Elkington, sector specialist officer at the mill, said: “2025 is an exciting year for Worsbrough Mill Museum and Country Park as we celebrate its 400th anniversary.
“We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Barnsley College to offer unique opportunities for students to engage with the mill.”
