THANKS to a county-wide operation one of South Yorkshire’s most wanted suspected burglars is in police custody after a high-speed pursuit in Penistone.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, during the Proactive Roads Policing Team’s night shift, an officer spotted a Suzuki driving erratically with what were believed to be cloned plates.

At around 1.15am the officer requested the driver of the vehicle to stop, however a pursuit commenced where the driver was witnessed reaching speeds of 90mph and driving on the wrong side of the road.

A stinger was used but didn’t stop the driver taking chances to evade police and in the end the officer had to use their vehicle to push the suspect off the road.

Two suspects, including an alleged wanted burglar, were quickly arrested.

Inspector Matt Collings said: “Our officers are highly skilled and experienced drivers, but what cannot be installed in any training is their passion and commitment to protecting and serving their communities; this is innate and makes them exceptional police officers.

“Those involved in criminality are more likely to take further risks on our roads and pose a danger to innocent members of the public.

“Our role as roads policing officers is to intercept their criminality and reduce that risk.

“The arrest in the early hours was a great result for the officers who have been looking for this suspect for a while, but it also a great result for the public of South Yorkshire knowing two suspects were apprehended and now face charges and court.”
