JOHN Stones broke an England record at the weekend and is now set to play for them in the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Germany.

England, who won their group then came from 1-0 down on 95 minutes to beat Slovakia 2-1 in the last 16, are now due to play Switzerland in the quarter-final from 5pm on Saturday in Düsseldorf.

Stones – who is from Thurlstone and began his career with Barnsley – has made 23 major tournament appearances which is the second most behind his captain Harry Kane.

Stones and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford both broke former defender Ashley Cole’s record by making 23 consecutive starts in major tournaments for England.

The former Penistone Grammar School pupil, 30, has 76 England caps with three goals, having been to three Euros and two World Cups.

Two former Barnsley loanees also featured in the win over Slovakia.

Kieran Trippier continued to start at left-back while striker Ivan Toney came off the bench seconds before the injury-time equaliser.
