LOCAL MP John Healey joined the Royal Family and senior politicians to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in London at the weekend.
Approximately 10,000 members of the public lined Whitehall in the capital to take part in the annual two-minute silence on Sunday.
Wreaths were laid to mark the Armistice of the First World War and all other conflicts involving British and Commonwealth forces.
John, who is also the Defence Secretary, said: “On Remembrance Sunday, we unite behind our Armed Forces community and honour those who gave their lives for our freedom.
“We think of those who fell liberating Europe on D-Day 80 years ago.
“And we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country in the conflicts before and since.
“We have a duty to educate future generations about their courage and commitment to defending Britain.
“To all those serving, those who have served, and their families, we say thank you.
“And for those we have lost, we will remember them.”
PENISTONE and Stocksbridge MP Marie Tidball paid her respects to those who have served in the Armed Forces on Remembrance Sunday.
Ms Tidball said it was an ‘absolute privilege’ to attend the event at Penistone Grammar School at the weekend.
She added: “Remembrance is the moment we come together as a nation to honour those who have served, not only in the First and Second World Wars, but in all conflict since.
“They have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms and protect our way of life.
“We are deeply proud of our veterans, serving UK and Commonwealth personnel and the families who support them, for the contribution they make to our country. “Theirs is the ultimate public service.
“This story of sacrifice is woven into our town’s history, and their memory lives on through our collective acts of remembrance.
“This is why, on this Remembrance Sunday, we join with millions of others across the country to commemorate - remembering the past, respecting the present, and working towards a peaceful future.
“In Penistone, we will remember them.”
