THESE days he’s an actor currently playing US president Donald Trump in a play, but Spencer K Gibbons was once a guitarist in a thriving Barnsley band who had a huge hit in America.
Spencer, who now lives in Northampton, will be back in Barnsley next month as a guest at the premier of a documentary film about the band Me and Them.
The band, regular performers at the Corner Pin in Barnsley which effectively became their ‘home’, had a number two hit in the USA with a cover of the Beatles’ song Tell Me Why in 1964. The following year they became the Chris Andrews Band, scoring a number two hit with Yesterday Man it was number one all over Europe and was only kept off the number one spot in the UK by the runaway success of Ken Dodd’s Tears.
Dave Cherry’s film about the band traces their rise to fame and tells the story of when the BBC banned their record ‘I Think I’m Gonna Kill Myself’ in 1964.
The premier, featuring Stairfoot Rounabout singer Dave as well as Spencer, will be held at Shaw Lane Sports Club on Friday October 19 from 7pm and will raise money for Barnsley Hospice.
