A NEW paying system, electric charge point and a lighting wall are some of the big features of a new town centre car park.

Market Gate is the first major piece of construction completed as part of the Better Barnsley town centre regeneration scheme.

It was opened yesterday by Mayor Coun Brian Mathers with a ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, followed by a speech from Barnsley Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton. Tony Shaw, director of contractor Henry Boot, the firm overseeing the development, also attended

The car park has space for up to 170 vehicles, along with four spaces with locking facilities for motorcycles and ten secure bicycle storage lockers. There are also eight dedicated disabled parking bays, grouped close to the car park entrance, and Blue Badge holders are welcome to use any of the bays free of charge.
