AFTER a month of sharing the stories of some of Barnsley’s best and brightest youngsters it’s already clear that this year’s Young Champions will be a triumphant return.

From Britain’s youngest black belt Mayon Jayawickrama, to the brave and resilient cancer survivor Indie Violet Senior, the returning competition has helped share some truly inspirational moments.

But there’s still a good chunk of time left ahead of the award night at the Metrodome on June 13 and there are plenty more youngsters deserving of attention.

We want everyone to have a chance to get their story shared, and that’s why we’re asking for people to send in youngsters they believe to be worthy of nominations.

The categories for this year’s awards are:

Student of the Year

Young Apprentice

Young Fundraiser

Young Carer

Young Sportsperson

Young Volunteer

Young Conqueror

Young Community Hero

Young Entertainer

Young Entrepreneur

Special Achievement

Young Team of the Year (Entertainment)

Nominees will be featured in the paper, before our panel of judges pull together a shortlist.

A combination of judges’ votes and a public vote which we introduced in November’s Proud of Barnsley awards will then be used to decide the final winners.

We will also be handing out the Outstanding Young Champion award on the night for one youngster whose achievements have wowed judges and earned them some additional, special recognition.

Last year’s popular host, the famed children’s entertainer and radio personality Sam Nixon, will be returning once more to help hand out awards.

If you know anyone who you believe is worthy of one of these awards, send their details and a brief description to youngchampions@barnsley-chronicle.co.uk.
