IMAGES of the Barnsley skyline as rarely seen before were captured earlier this week.

The spectacular displays of the Aurora Borealis - better known as the Northern Lights were photographed on Sunday night from Matthew Woodhall’s back bedroom in Birdwell.

Keen photographer Matthew, 39, says he has managed in the past to photograph the colourful phenomenon in more rural areas in West Yorkshire where there is less light pollution.

But on Sunday night the skies above Barnsley were clear enough and made it possible for the Northern Lights to be clearly visible and photographed by Matthew at around 9pm.
