Former Barnsley player Martin Devaney could be about to return to the game with Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

The winger, who played in Andy Ritchie's promotion winning side in 2006, has been training with the Ducks for a fortnight and is set to feature in their home friendly against North Ferriby United tomorrow.

Devaney, 35, who lives in Oxspring, hopes a deal can be struck. His new job coaching Bradford City reserves would not be affected if he agreed to join the Evo-Stik South new boys.

He told the Chronicle: "My job at Bradford is Monday to Friday so I'd be free to play Saturdays. There may be something there with Shaw Lane. I've really enjoyed training there and I feel fit.It was a good opportunity to get fit and I spoke to Craig Wood (owner) and he was keen to get me involved. "I hope something can be sorted out with them."

Aquaforce manager Craig Elliott says he's been impressed with the former Red. He said: "Martin's fitness levels for someone his age are incredible. On top of that he's also got a lot of quality. We're hoping to sit down with him next week and sort something out. It'll be a good test for us against North Ferriby who won the FA Trophy at Wembley last season. We are facing one of the best non-league teams around and hoping for a good turnout.

"It'll be nice for Barnsley fans to see Devaney play again after Bobby Hassell's testimonial."

Also trialling with Aquaforce are ex-Barnsley defender Brad Kilburn and former academy 'keeper Danny Rusling who left Oakwell in the summer. Elliott added: "They've both done well. We'll make a decision on them next week." ࿫
