DAVIS Keillor-Dunn is not ruling out a late charge towards the top-scorer title in League One this season.
The 27-year-old forward scored both the Reds’ goals in a 2-1 win at Northampton Town on Tuesday, taking his tally to 13 for the club this season in all competitions.
He has 12 league goals, with only three players scoring more including top-scorers Jay Stansfield, at Birmingham, and Wycombe’s Richard Kone who are on 16.
Keillor-Dunn told the Chronicle: “That’s always my aim.
“I am not an out and out number nine and don’t take penalties, so it will be tough.
“But I will always be looking at the top of the leaderboard and trying to catch them.
“I was unlucky last year not to get it.”
Keillor-Dunn’s opening goal in midweek saw him bring down a high pass, cut inside and smash home from outside the box.
He said: “I would probably say it was the best one I’ve scored for Barnsley.
“I liked the one at home to Wrexham, the ball over from Phillo (Adam Phillips) and I cut inside. But that one this week was definitely up there.”
He reacted to that goal with the ‘chicken’ celebration that Northampton manager Kevin Nolan made his trademark when a long-serving player in the Premier League.
Sunderland fan Keillor-Dunn said: “Me and my brother used to sit in the stands and, every time he scored against Sunderland, he would give that celebration. It was something I had in my mind before the game.
“I said if I had a chance to score, I would give him a taste of his own medicine. It was a good day for me and nice to top it off with a nice little celebration.”
Barnsley will be without suspended duo Luca Connell and Mael de Gevigney when they host Lincoln on Saturday, with several other players injured.
“It’s one of the best clubs I have been to in terms of depth. Lads are champing at the bit. I feel sorry for the gaffer with his team selection, he must have headaches about it. We have lads out which is massive and we need everybody to try to get us up that league.
“If you want to do anything in your season, you need to beat Lincoln at home. Simple as that. They are a good well-drilled side with quality but we will focus on ourselves and look to win.”
Keillor-Dunn has been impressed by new signing Clement Rodrigues.
“Clem has been brilliant. He had two tough games and it was ‘welcome to English football’.
“You can see he’s got loads of ability in training. I am looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the table in the run for the play-offs.”
