CONCERN has been raised that a new footbridge proposed to link CEAG car park to the town centre is not a suitable replacement for the closure of Jumble Lane crossing.

IBI Group submitted proposals for the bridge on behalf of Barnsley Council as part of its outline application for the £50m town centre regeneration scheme.

But businessman Rob Teal, of Clyde Street, Barnsley, isn't convinced what is being suggested is up to scratch.

Mr Teal, who uses the Jumble Lane crossing up to four times a day, said: "Jumble Lane crossing allows you to get across with a pushchair, bicycle or wheelchair, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"The bridge proposed does not have ramps to access it but stairs and a lift. What if the lifts break down?"

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman, said: "Many people find the regular closing of the safety barriers an inconvenience, and in some cases, a frightening space."

"The crossing moves higher up the Network Rail risk register each year and given its current status it is in urgent need of improvement."
