MINDLESS yobs set fires at Mapplewell Park twice last weekend - prompting a local councillor to call on residents to come forward with any information.

It comes less than a week after Mapplewell Bowling Club - also situated at the park - was attacked by vandals.

But at the weekend, the damage continued and a fire was set on both Saturday and Sunday night.

Coun Steve Hunt, who represents the ward, said: “I have been to the park to assess the damage.

“An office chair has been thrown onto the top of one of the seating pods at the side of the MUGA.

“The chair has then been set alight.

“This is arson and criminal damage which are extremely serious offences.

“The CCTV from Sunday night’s incident has already been reviewed by the council.

“It seems as though there were two youths involved.

“The camera has picked up a good image of one of the youths.

“This image is being circulated to the relevant officers.”

Coun Hunt is urging anyone with any more information to get in touch with the police.

He added: “We are going through a spate of incidents at the moment.

“I am working tirelessly with the police and council to get more action and additional patrols.

“The council have confirmed that the park is now a priority area for their neighbourhood wardens.

“They’re also working closely with the Co-op who have also suffered from recent incidents.

“We need more information from the community about who is involved in these incidents and more reports of the antisocial behaviour that is occurring.”
